History Of Fire Sprinklers

Fire sprinklers are imperative to ensure life safety and protection against fire. Not only do they comply with local fire safety regulations, but they also provide you with peace of mind and ensure that you have adequate protection in place. You can find fire sprinklers everywhere, be it an office building, an educational establishment, or a hospital building. The use of fire sprinklers has now been made mandatory by authority figures like NFPA and OSHA, which report 85% fewer home accidents in the presence of sprinklers.

But before we emphasize the present scenario and advancements of fire sprinklers in today’s fire safety industry, their history provides us with valuable anecdotes on their transformation journey from a simple suppression tool to an integral part of our fire safety system.

Here What We Cover

A Brief History Of Fire Sprinklers

When we talk about the history of fire sprinklers, we usually refer to the first modern sprinkler installed at Theater Royal, London, by British Inventor Sir William Congreve. However, the earliest report dates back to the 15th century, during Leonardo Da Vinci’s period.

Let’s divide each section into separate parts for better understanding.

Leonardo Da Vinci: 15th Century

Leonardo Da Vinci, the painter we know, created beautiful art pieces like The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. Unknown fact about him: he is also known to have designed the first sprinkler system while he was trying to arrange a dinner party for his guests supported by automated machines. His plan failed tremendously, as his entire mechanism malfunctioned. And so did his sprinkler when it flooded the whole area after extinguishing the burnt food.

Ambrose Godfrey: 1723

This is when the first automated sprinkler system came into the picture. Invented by Ambrose Godfrey, a chemist, he utilized gunpowder to enable a large quantity of water to extinguish the given fire. Even though this method did not turn out to be a practical solution for advanced sprinkler systems, it did become one of the pillar concepts for developing the fire extinguisher.

John Carey: 1807

Though it is well known that Congreve patented the first improved fire sprinkler system, John Carey developed another design before this and filed a patent for it. His idea was to enable perforated pipes in fire safety systems. It is important to remember here that it has been almost a century since Godfrey and her gunpowder innovation.

William Congreve: 1812

He is predominantly known for being the first to patent an advanced and modern design of fire sprinklers. His design was installed at the Theatre Royal in London. His innovation included a reservoir for water, which, during an emergency, would seep into a connected area of perforated pipes, producing a sprinkler effect.

The problem with his sprinkler system was that it was not automated. You’d have to manually suppress the fire with the help of those perforated pipes. It took 12 years for the next person to arrive and patent the first-ever automatic sprinkler system.

Frederick Grinnell: 1850

Frederick Grinnell, the creator of the ‘Grinnell Sprinkler,’ established his company in 1950 to develop and manufacture sprinkler systems. Gradually and eventually, he established the sprinkler industry and developed the existing designs and mechanisms of what we know as modern-day sprinkler systems.

Philip W. Pratt: 1872

The next goal for inventors was to invent an automatic fire sprinkler system that would not require manual labor. Philip W. Pratt developed the first design for a fully automatic sprinkler system.

Henry S. Parmalee: 1874

Two years after Pratt developed his design, Henry S. Parmalee improved it and added the automated sprinkler head, which shatters inside the unit at a specific heat temperature and enables the flow of water to be extinguished and suppressed.

Fast Forward To The Present Scenario

After developing Grinell Sprinklers in 1881, Frederick worked on Parmalee’s designs, improved them, and eventually invented the glass disc sprinkler. Over the next 50 years, the next major advancement in sprinkler technology came into place. The new and effective spray sprinkler system replaced conventional pattern sprinklers. This is still the design that our modern-day sprinklers use today.

Sprinkler Systems Today

Even though the design and functionality of sprinkler systems have not drastically changed since the 1950s, the materials used and strategic mechanisms have paved the way for better fire management. The focus is now more on the mandatory and proper installation of these units. Authority figures like NFPA mandate these suppression units to be installed in every residential, commercial, and industrial building to ensure maximum safety. Certain laws in specific countries require all individuals to have at least one sprinkler installed in their space to ensure adequate protection.

Earlier sprinkler systems used materials like cast iron and lead pipes that were characterized as bulky and less efficient due to factors like corrosion and contribution to significant health issues. Compared to our present-day sprinkler systems, durable materials are utilized, such as stainless steel and copper, for pipes that ensure high resistance to corrosion and contribute to the longer shelf life of the system. Not just that, these materials also aid in cost-effectiveness, better strength and durability along with antimicrobial properties.

Modern fire sprinkler systems feature innovative and imporved designs incorporating sprinkler heads which can be used on all types of sprinklers available today such as the wet, dry, preaction and deluge.

Residential fire sprinkler systems have become a common instance, aimed at providing better coverage and faster protection in emergencies. And not to mention, the advent of advanced technology has enabled remote monitoring capabilities that helps you access your units anywhere and check up on situations anytime.

Initiatives And Campaigns

The NFPA introduced a Fire Sprinkler Initiative campaign that aims to increase the number of new one—and two-family homes that install fire sprinkler systems. This is to provide adequate help and support to stakeholders to navigate the code-making and legislative process to pass fire sprinkler requirements for new homes in the community.

The Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) also supports and promotes the installation of fire sprinkler systems at your establishment to adhere to updated codes and regulations. According to its statistics, the presence of fire sprinklers at home can reduce the chance of property damage by fire by up to 62%

Similarly, Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition offers free educational content on the benefits of the life-saving impact of residential fire sprinkler systems.

Initiatives and campaigns like this aim to raise public awareness of fire sprinkler systems’ safety and protection capabilities and instigate the general populace to install them in their residential and commercial properties. In addition to adhering to safety standards and codes, installing fire sprinklers also fosters a safe and protected environment for all individuals, providing adequate egress time for a hassle-free evacuation procedure.

Conclusion

Fire sprinklers, in today’s time,  have become a crucial tool to ensure a proper fire safety and protection system in place. Without these, there’s no doubt that your fire system is incomplete. Unlike your other protection tools, fire sprinklers are 24/7 on alert and ready to suppress any fire that comes in the path of your safety. Automatic sprinklers in the current scenario enable hands-free and labor-saving defense that safeguards your property even when it is unoccupied. Hence, integrating these superior means of fire suppression can go a long way toward enhancing your existing fire protection system and saving you from the inconvenience of an accidental fire emergency.
